I received a new review for BOUND SPIRITS, Book 1: Bloodmoon Cove Spirits Series: "One of my favorite fictional tropes reveals secrets from a dark past overshadowing the present, and BOUND SPIRITS has them in abundance. The town of Bloodmoon Cove harbors ghosts and demonic forces, inadvertently released generations ago when the elders of the local Native American tribe opened an interdimensional portal. Ranger John Cotter is haunted by the mystery of his father’s disappearance. His family history includes a grim episode of an ancestor tortured and left to die in a cave that is sometimes there, sometimes not, able to be found only when it “wants” to be. Esme Dumas (a name she has assumed because she doesn’t know her own identity) feels compelled to hide her traumatic past, for a reason that seems vital to her and therefore convincing to the reader. When the full truth comes out, her reaction to learning about her origin comes across as realistically ambivalent. Both John and Esme are portrayed as warmhearted, likable people, and the relationship between them develops believably. The secondary characters are also lifelike and engaging. The reader gets the sense of a fully developed setting that has existed before the story begins and will continue to exist after one reads ‘The End’. I also admire the way the concept of ‘bound spirits’ is used both literally and metaphorically; at the climax, this motif weaves together the separate plot threads. A true cross-genre story, BOUND SPIRITS maintains an effective balance between horror and romance. I found this novel thoroughly satisfying. Recommended." ~author Margaret L. I received my first review for LOST AND FOUND, A Bloodmoon Cove Spirits Series 2-in-1 including LOST, Book 8 and FOUND, Book 9: "Wow, I discovered really cool use of supernatural elements in LOST AND FOUND, A Bloodmoon Cove Spirits Series 2-in-1. There were genuinely scary scenes in LOST. I liked the repeated motif of being in a 'place' outside of normal time, treated in different ways. And the presence of Damaris, the heroine in LOST (I cheered when I discovered she also played a role in FOUND!), ties together the two stories. The last few chapters of FOUND are so eerie and sad. Very effective. I sympathized with the characters, whose emotions were very realistic, and I was glad to see the uplifting conclusion that was still a little sad. In each story in this collection, the events unfolded believably in the context of the 'reality' of the setting. They seemed perfectly fitting yet not predictable. I was never quite sure how things would turn out for the protagonists, which allowed for an effective creation of suspense." ~author Margaret L. This is where some of the most big-hearted people live, love, and help each other out. I have no doubt that many ladies in the real world have had their own version of an "Alexander" in their lives. However, I do not believe most of them were as mean as Riley's Alexander--assistant to the Chief Human Resources Officer at Trouvaille Commercial Airlines, [who] never believed Riley was not interested in having a romantic relationship with him, even though Riley told him every time they met for coffee or meetings that she was not interested in him that way. But now Alexander is a believer, and he has informed Riley that he has done some shady things to help her advance in her career. Alexander goes on to explain that he was going to pin all of it on Riley, making himself seem the victim, and ruin her career forever. Watching Riley, Blaze, and their kin as they deal with all the problems that come their way kept my attention throughout the story, just as watching Riley and Blaze spend some wonderful time together did. If you have not read any of the previous titles, I assure you that each story stands alone. However, it is nice to see the previous main characters of stories have parts as secondary characters in others. It makes me feel as though I actually know these people. Karen Wiesner weaves all their lives together to create a warm and friendly town with some amazing locals in it. "The hero and heroine of this novel face a genuine problem with no facile, obvious solution. I could hardly wait to find out how they would resolve the conflict between their needs and wishes. They’re both well-developed characters with whom it’s easy to sympathize. The external conflict incited by a malicious co-worker meshes effectively with Blaze and Riley’s marital difficulties. The small-town setting and the cast of engaging secondary characters enrich the story. The reader gets a clear impression of a self-contained world that has been going on since before the novel starts and will continue after it ends, yet HEARTS ABLAZE stands perfectly fine on its own with no need to have read other books in the series. The conclusion struck me as entirely satisfactory even though realistically imperfect. Riley may not get what she wanted at first, but both she and Blaze learn and grow through the experience." ~award-winning author Margaret L. Carter HEARTS ABLAZE, Book 4: Peaceful Pilgrim Series by Karen Wiesner Women's Fiction Available now in paperback and electronic formats Riley is an ultra-modern woman. She wants a successful career, her own life, and love that sets her heart ablaze. In short, she wants everything. Blaze is old-fashioned, believing marriage means a husband and wife live together, sleep together every night, and eventually raise a family together--and those kids don't spend most of their hours in daycare. The author manages to convey what each character is going through. The emotions really hit home to me. Many readers will feel an instant connection to Eden since she deals with battling her weight and low self-esteem. All of us have felt that way at some time or another in our lives. The love between Vincent and Kira, as well as his reluctant devotion to the mentor he hasn't seen in many years, clashes with the pervasive feeling that we -- along with the characters -- are never sure who can be trusted. I sympathized with both Kira's reservations about trusting Vincent while he hides so many secrets from her and Vincent's frustration about not being able to keep her safe. Both come across as strong characters, whom we root for even when they seem to be making unwise choices. The mystery of Kira's origin is gradually unfolded with just enough slow reveal to keep the reader eager for more.” ~award-winning author Margaret L. "This final volume in the Arrow of Time Chronicles effectively weaves together all the story arc threads developed in the previous three books in a satisfying conclusion. Alliances become stronger under the shadow of a common danger. Not without loss, the civilized worlds of the galaxy are saved (for now). Our favorite couples overcome serious threats to their relationships in believable ways. The reformed villain achieves redemption (one of my favorite tropes). As in the rest of the series, the principal characters have appealing, individualized personalities, and the worldbuilding highlights the differences among the various cultures even as they begin to accept their newly revealed commonalities. The lingering mystery of those common elements and the "yes, but" epilogue don't, for me, detract from the overall sense of closure; those features of the story just lend an increased feeling of realism." ~Award-winning author Margaret L. 5 Stars! “In UNLUCKY IN LOVE, Tally (the heroine in BLAME IT ON THE RAIN, Book 10) remained a good friend despite that Layla did her brother Benji (hero in NEVER A BRIDE, Book 11) wrong in the past. Layla started out believing she was the catch of the county, determined to reclaim the man she wanted to be the one for her. Facing that it was too late might have been the hardest thing she’s ever done except that right now she needs to learn how to put aside her own selfishness and figure out what matters in life. In Book 10, Adam was anything but a hero, but, in Book 12, he’s been through a lot and come out the other side, painfully aware of his unforgivable mistakes in the past. He’s no longer the same jerk who loved Tally and cheated on her as if that wasn’t a conflict. In the process of changing his ways, his feelings have also taken a 180. Returning to the place where his bad deeds blew up in his face is an eye-opener as nothing else could be. In this tale of redemption, two former villains discover that the road to recovery is a long, life-altering one, just as ever finding happiness…and love…again will be.” ~Linda's Reviews Find out more about Adventures in Amethyst Series here: https://karenwiesner.weebly.com/adventures-in-amethyst-series.html http://www.writers-exchange.com/adventures-in-amethyst-series/ I received a new review for INDELIBLE, Book 3: Arrow of Time Chronicles:
4 Stars! “As in the first two volumes, this book skillfully balances the space-epic overarching plot with character and relationship developments. Moreover, the problems of the individuals and couples directly affect the interstellar alliance precariously being formed. We learn more about the nonhuman species and their cultures, while Tori and Raze, newly married, struggle with challenges to their union. A major focus in this novel highlights the reformed villain—one of my favorite tropes—and his onetime lover, both of whom have to deal with deep-seated trust issues. On lighter notes, an engagingly mischievous child character is introduced, and, to my delight, Tori agrees to adopt the alien pet that she briefly encountered in the first volume. In preparation for the climactic crisis of the final book, the personal and galaxy-wide stakes rise to new heights. …an engaging story…” ~Award-winning author Margaret L. 5 Stars! “In NEVER A BRIDE, Charlize Seagrave came from an anything-but-happy upbringing. The one bright spot had been her grandmother, who just died. In retrospect, she regrets that she didn’t cherish the little love she’d been given the way she should have. It was easy to feel sympathy for Charlize and the poor choices she made when she was younger. Ben Johnson is a caring, sensitive man--nothing like Charlize’s psychotic ex-. Being that kind of person, he goes above and beyond with his selfish ex-girlfriend even when maybe he should have given up long ago. Charlize and Ben both deserved happiness, and it was exciting to see the path they took toward each other and a happily-ever-after neither actually expected. I look forward to the next in the series.” ~Linda's Reviews Find out more about Adventures in Amethyst Series here: https://karenwiesner.weebly.com/adventures-in-amethyst-series.html http://www.writers-exchange.com/adventures-in-amethyst-series/ I received a new review for BABY, BABY, Book 1: Family Heirlooms Series 4 Stars! “Believable and emotionally engaging story of growth within a marriage. I enjoyed BABY, BABY very much and loved the way the ending worked out. Robert's wrongheaded attitude is quite believable once we know about his father's bad example, and his coming to terms with the new knowledge about his parents' relationship makes Robert's change of heart credible. I felt sorry for him and even sympathetic to him despite being thoroughly exasperated by him, too. Naturally, my main sympathy was with Tamara.” ~Award-winning author Margaret L. 4 Stars! "This second novel in the Arrow of Time Chronicles picks up threads from the first volume while adding new ones. It raises the stakes in the characters' relationships and emotional lives as well as the rocky road toward forming an interplanetary alliance against the aggressive would-be conquerors of the known galaxy. Raze and Tori have declared their love and formed a common-law 'marriage' of the sort that substitutes for legal ties in their culture, but their union doesn't automatically go smoothly in all respects. Meanwhile, we follow other couples who are forming bonds. On the large-scale level, culture clash among species is convincingly presented, and the mysterious phenomena of 'phantom energy' and the inexplicable genetic similarity among inhabitants of distant worlds are explored. Again, the story maintains a skillful balance between the large-scale conflict and the characters' personal crises. To help the reader keep track of people and events, the name of the current viewpoint character appears at the head of each chapter. Like the first book, this one has an extensive appendix with a glossary of terms and lots of background information on the various planetary species and cultures, a feature I like very much. The novel ends with some problems resolved but plenty of loose ends left to draw readers into the next installment." ~Award-winning author Margaret L. 4 Stars! "Epic space adventure with engaging characters! This interstellar adventure set in the twenty-second century deals cleverly with the problems of faster-than-light-travel, instantaneous communication, and relativistic time dilation by invoking alien technology gifted to Earth's refugees. We don't need to understand how it works, because the human protagonists don't understand much about it, not being astrophysicists or engineers. Tori is a librarian, and Raze is a diplomat. They're engaging characters, and their relationship as lifelong friends beginning to realize they're in love with each other is believable and relatable. The potential complication of attempted seduction by a brother-sister pair of advanced aliens is worked out in a mature, compassionate way. Tori's lack of self-confidence is believable, too, not at all carried to ridiculous extremes. I love her collection of pets. We encounter various extraterrestrial species with physical and cultural differences that make each unique but not too alien to identify with. Even the villain, whom we meet in the opening scene, has a potentially sympathetic side. This novel drops a hint, probably to be pursued later in the series, implying a reason why all those species follow the basic human body pattern. The narrative gracefully balances the overarching plot of interstellar warfare and diplomacy with character development and relationships. On the whole, though, this novel is highly recommended for fans of futuristic SF with romantic elements. The conclusion leaves plenty of sequel hooks without resort to a frustrating cliffhanger ending." ~Award-winning author Margaret L. INDOMITABLE, the fourth installment in Karen Wiesner’s Arrow of Time Dystopian Science Fiction, brought this series to a satisfyingly suspenseful end. At the end of INDELIBLE, Book 3, I wanted--needed an ending to this story of all the lives the series brought into my world. Would Halon earn his redemption and prove he has the answers to the impending war that may decimate all the worlds in the galaxy? Can he and Vespera finally be together in a world on the brink of annihilation? Will Tori and Raze finally get their happily ever after? It all depends on the multitude of civilizations we’ve met throughout Books 1 through 3, civilizations whose varied environments have shaped them each into unique cultures with their own colors, beliefs, and skills in spite of sharing the same base DNA. Though they all share a common cause--to save their worlds--they still need to trust one another and unite to overcome the evil Sinshe and turn their device of mass destruction into one that will rebuild dying planets and save multiple cultures. 4 1/2 Stars! "HIDDEN is *creepy*. The wonderful thing about this series is that each story can stand alone. You do not need to read any of the previous titles to enjoy this chilling tale. It starts out slowly, so readers can be introduced to the main and secondary characters. But after the first chapter, things take off at a sprint and they never really slow back down. The characters are well developed, believable, and not idiots as many in supernatural romances or movies are. If the situation looks too dangerous, alternatives are discussed. Of course, thanks to the imp that must rest on this author's shoulder, it does not matter. *Something* will force them to make a move and pray for the best. As a doctor, his old man worked endless hours that had driven Jon’s mother to irreversible actions, devastating them all and causing Jon to be raised by the housekeeper. Jon’s bitter sense of betrayal is justifiable. It was hard to see a young family torn apart like that. “Tracey is easy to love. She organizes the mess in the office of Jon, Rod, and Blackie’s business and shares a house with Jon and Blackie, cooking for them and generally mothering them. She’s not a fan of Jon’s on-again, off-again girlfriend Jessie and truthfully any romantic notions she’s had over Jon have been squashed because of the selfish vixen he can’t seem to say no to, even when he should. “I wept over Jon and Tracie’s seemingly impossible predicaments that would take a miracle to sort out. She’s so naïve he’s afraid if she’s allowed to make her own decisions--and mistakes--she’ll get hurt. “On the surface, Rod Summers is the very definition of bad boy. I was skittish of him from the minute he walked into Bethany’s salon. The rumors about his temporary conquests are legendary. Even someone as sweet as Bethany has heard them. His wife Eden questions if his pledge to never again make a fool of himself--or her--over Delaney was just a pie-crust promise to convince her not to divorce him last time. I really felt for Eden as she struggled with the situation and her own self-worth and self-respect. Trevor is as clueless about women as he is about technology, but he’s made up for his mistakes in the past and he’s been working so hard to do right by his siblings who run the resort with him that he may have overlooked his immediate family of late. Ultimately, his heart was in the right place, and I couldn’t help loving him for that.
