I say this because it took me the first couple of chapters to remember I had read the first book. The characters were familiar, but I didn't put it all together at first. Ms. Wiesner writes a sensitive novella that looks at the fears some of us have. She delves into the fear of failure, fear of flying and other fears. For some of us, these fears can overwhelm and paralyze us and it keeps us from living life to the fullest. It was so tastefully and sensitively written how Craig and Christie work to overcome fears together. I was rooting for them the whole way through the book. I think you'll get a chuckle out of the misspoken phrases Craig sometimes says. You'll get an insightful look into Christie's fear of flying. 4 Stars! "Two unusual novellas! Both of them focus on intensely passionate relationships and include intriguing variations on their tropes. The Amethyst Star takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth with the surviving human remnants under constant attack from the intelligent but utterly merciless Carnivores. The vivid emotional lives of the Hunters contrast effectively with the efficient but sterile culture created by the human rulers to maximize reproduction and preserve the purity of the species. Of course the Hunter hero and his human destined mate, a procreative Queen living in what amounts to continuous protective custody, will unite with each other, but their struggles in getting to that point grip the reader's attention. In Creatures of the Night, the relationship between the heroine and her vampire lover isn't quite like any treatment of vampires and her kind that I've seen before. Although the atmosphere of most of the story is dreamlike and mysterious, all will be revealed in the end. There's a twist concerning the heroine that I don't want to spoil. In both novellas, I would have liked to read more details on, for instance, the evolutionary connection between humans and Hunters (there probably is one, since they can breed together) or the biology of the vampire hero's family heritage." ~author Margaret L.
